A free learn to hunt raccoon program is scheduled for Nov. 2 – 3, 2013 at the MacKenzie Center, W7303 County Road CS & Q, Poynette. The learn to hunt program is open to persons 10 years and older and families with total registration limited to 20 participants.
Sponsored by the Wisconsin Coonhunters Association, Southwestern Wisconsin Coonhunters Association and “Hillbilly” Bruce Schooley, the program will introduce novice hunters to raccoon hunting at night using trailing hounds.
Participants will learn raccoon biology and furbearer management, firearm safety, basics of hunting with hounds, rules and regulations, fur handling and pelt preparation. Participants will hunt under the direction of an experienced mentor and dog handler.
All food, lodging and equipment will be provided at no charge. Applications can be found by entering the keywords, “learn to hunt” on the DNR web page, dnr.wi.gov, and then selecting “small game events.”
